New Zealand Scholarships (NZS) recognise New Zealand’s close cultural, economic, and geographic ties with Southeast Asia. They seek to empower individuals with the knowledge, skills and qualifications to contribute to the economic, social, and political development of their region. These scholarships are offered for postgraduate level study only.
- Minimum of 18 years of age at the time of commencing the scholarship
- Be a citizen of the country for which you are applying and have resided in that country for at least the last two years – eligible countries are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia
- Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years on completion of the scholarship
- At least one year full- time (two years part-time) work experience

- Postgraduate Certificate (6 months)
- Postgraduate Diploma (1 year)
- Masters Degree (1 – 2 years)
- PhD (up to 3.5 years)
Priority Sectors:
- Agriculture development
- Renewable energy
- Disaster risk management
- PhD (up to 3.5 years)
- Public sector management/governance
- Private sector development
- English Language teaching – (Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar)
Important Information:
You will not be able to change your choice of study programme or educational institution after you have been selected for an NZS scholarship. Therefore, before you submit your NZS application, research each of the approved educational institutions and their course catalogues to find the right institution that suits your academic and personal needs, and a course that interests you and aligns with the sectors MFAT give priority to.
